How about a Mac ? MacBook Pro ?
The search continues ! I am looking forward to buy a MacBook Pro instead of PC NoteBook. As far as I have heard every designer got to have a Mac
. I had a long chat with Anand on which Book to buy, his suggestion is to go for a Macbook starting from INR 70k whereas I just can’t take my mind of MackBook Pro which starts from INR 1.15 lakhs .
There aren’t much difference in both, the MackBook is 13″ screen with a below 2 GHz processor whereas Pro comes with a screen size of 15.4″ & 17″ with 2.0 & 2.16 GHz processor option. Both are Intel Core Duo and supports MS XP
. The pro can be upgraded to 200GB HDD & 3GB memory. I wish they had a MacBook with 15″ screen, that would have been ideal for me.
Now there is a small problem, I saw that in the US and Singapore a 15″ MBP of 2.0 GHz is around INR 92K where as in India is a +25K INR . I tried amazon but they don’t have India in their “Amazon Payments Countries” yet i.e they won’t deliver any item to India. So either I have to get someone deliver it by hand or buy from Banglore and pay an extra 25K
.
Also, it seems that the standard MacBookPro 15″ 2.0 GHz in US have a 1GB memory and 120GB HDD whereas in India its a straight half ! 512 MB memory with 80 GB HDD :/ . What a rip off ! (they had not updated their website content.
)
I have to get the piece by Jan 10 or the sky will fall on me. Any suggestions are welcome

Here’s my advice:
Go for the Macbook Pro. If you can afford (read: squeeze that bank account dry), then go for the Macbook Pro. Advantages are bigger display (can’t use a 13 inch display to do some heavy editing), bigger HDD, more RAM (will explain) and, here’s the deal-sealer, discreet Graphics Card.
The macbook vanilla will not allow you to view some special effects which require texture lighting blah blah (the smoke effect in Disco, etc). Graphics card will also be good for creative software. There’s also the fact that you can plug in a SECOND DISPLAY for your work.
Last but certainly not the least, there’s the amaaaaaazing Aluminum finish. I fell in love with the powerbook (the standby machine when my iBook was given for servicing) and my next machine is going to be a macbook pro. The iBook’s plastic (though much better than PC laptops) doesn’t compare with the PB/MBP.
As for your 512MB RAM thing, I’m pretty sure you have looked at the Core Duo machines and not the Core 2 Duo one’s which come with a default 1GB. The cheapest Macbook comes with 512MB RAM, while any MBP comes with 1GB. (http://www.keystone.in/08122006/Offers_files/Laptop-12-2006.pdf)
One more thing, get it in India itself. Worth it for the warranty offered. I’m not sure if you lose warranty or anything like that, but the fact of the matter is, if anything goes wrong, just dump it on your dealer and he takes care of it. Mine even gave me a standby machine (the powerbook).
Oh and yes, wait for Macworld before you buy…you never know what comes out of there…(the Machines might comes shipped with Leopard)
Hope I was of help

Thanks a lot Milind ! Actually they had not updated their indian website content, so I got confused.
As of now, I have asked almost 20 dealers in 6 different cities and one of them is offering a nice deal. But I am not sure if the guy said Core Duo or Core 2 Duo .
If that goes well, I am thinking of getting it before Christmas.

It would be the sweetest christmas gift….
Btw, how much you getting it for? Check for their warranty support, many of these guys import them from abroad, and lose out on warranty. You will have to personally take it to Apple, Bangalore for service and such.

Sure is sweet, I wish someone gift me that
LOL
The guy said they provide warranty and is an award winning dealer n all.
He’s giving
MBP 2.16 / 1GB / 100GB /15″ for 1.04 lakhs

Amazing price. Go for it. And you don’t even have to wait for macworld, cause jobs isn’t going to introduce any new features in these machines, they are already up to date.
I’m gonna have to wait a few years till my bank account fills up again. Who knows, I might then be holding a 16 core, 8GB with a couple of terabytes in a half inch thick…thing…
