Sify Internet Cafe’s Sucks!

What do you do when your ISP is down for a day.? You go to the cafe. Exactly what I did. I visited one of the 2 Sify Internet Cafe’ here in Kannur. My first impression - It Sucks ! As I was entering, the guy standing outside asked me to remove my shoes :/ . Wht the !
I know its part of Indian culture and I repect it but, in a Net Cafe ? :|

The guy who manages the place is after me for taking a membership, telling me all the crap about its advantages. Then after all I got a system, I asked him if he had firefox, which ofcourse he had never heard of :| . I asked him if I can install it, he agreed with a weird face as if I am going to install some spyware.

Nevermind that, the worst part was the ADVERTISMENT. As you start you are greeted with an ad window, close it, enter a website url and another advertisment window pops up from nowhere. I don’t think google.com has any pop ups, atleast not for the search service. Oh yeah .. there is a small advertisment in upper right corner of screen which covers around 4% of 15″ screen. I asked the guy if I can close this, which he proudly described that its not his problem as its default from Sify.

  2. I once had the displeasure of going in one of them a few months back. Horribly slow speeds, pop up ads, and the thought that some dirty guy must have been molesting himself a few minutes before entered…

  3. Wow… if i dont get it at home, then i dont surf over the internet!!!

coz I can always settle down on some good old game…
i have never come to terms with any other internet connection other than my lovely BSNL dataone… and I will not go to a internet centre, even if they allow me to surf endlessly for free in India!!!

  5. Well…suck is not the appropriate word for Sify Cafes. We need a more appropriate term for that!! :P Well compared to Sify atleast I found a excellent Cafe here… 17″ Flat Monitors, 512MB RAM, Windows XP, Latest Firefox, Skype pre installed, WebCamera, Headphones and you can found any messenger you think of installed already!! And on top of that charges just Rs 10/hour!!!!!! Ofcourse ID verification is a standard feature here! Only glitch…only 6 terminals…with that investment…I can adjust to it!

  6. Last thing..in that cafe…Windows XP comes with SP2 with all patched up!! Really…the owner is a geek like all of us! And today I found Opera 9.10 working also!

  7. Yeah perhaps Sify should have a background check of the person they are giving the cafe to .

Kannur guy must be running a dhaaba before for sure . :D

  8. One more to comment on Sify, they have some junk stables where we have to select whether we want to use the system for one hour or multiples of 15 minutes (chares will be more). Say if we select 1 hour pulse and if system hangs after 5 minutes of login, whole amount will be detected from our membership balance which we will not get back.
