Bought HandyCam : Sony DCR-TRV285E
After much thought on whether to buy this or a Vaio later, I went with Sony HandyCam especially because I am expecting a drive to TVM later this week with my family.
This piece offers amazing features for its price. the cost of this is around $371 (16,900 INR) but it costed me a 2000 INR more for VAT
. The funny part is the battery costs 3k which stands for 1.5 hours on LCD display or about 2 hours on viewfinder. The battery can be upgraded to 7 hours which will cost around 9k . I suppose this is the costliest part on this cam  . Apart from the usuall Digi cam features it works as a Webcam and allows USB Streaming of video’s . Though the software they gave is really odd.
Few Features :
- 1/6 CCD
- Zoom (20x Optical
- 990x Digital)
- 2.5 LCD Monitor
- Built in Light
- STAMINA 11 hrs
- SteadyShot
- Start/Stop button & Zoom on LCD frame
- NightShot Plus
- Easy Handycam
- Battery Info
- Easy Dubbing
- USB Streaming
- Direct access to ‘Click to DVD’ / VCD Burn
- iLink (DV IN / OUT)
Download the Software : 127 MB
Part 01 | Part 02 | Part 03 | Part 04 | Part 05 | Part 06 | Part 07
- You will need WinRAR software to open the files. Once you have WinRAR,
- Check if all the files from rapidshare are there in the folder, The first six files are of 20.0 MB each and the last one being 7.9 MB. All the 7 files need to be in the same folder.
- Once Downloaded, open up “Sony Picture Package.part01.rar” (Extract through WinRAR), it will detect all the other files and create a folder “Sony Picture Package” which has all the driver files of Sony DCR-TRV285E and other softwares of Sony.

Hi, sreejith, i am planning to buy a SONY handyam. My dealer wants me to buy DCR-HC46E (Rs.32K). But with tight budget i want to buy DCR-TRV285E (the one you have bought). Can you tell me how is it working now? What are the negative aspects of this cam. It would be much more helpful if u re[ply me within this week….Thanks & Regards….Ranjit

Hey Rajat, Vinay
My Yahoo! IM is totally messed up . I cant recieve or send message properly. If I go offline, the status is online for the rest of the day to others :/ . So, I dont use Y! much .
IWD is gone for a short period.
April 28th, 2006 at 2:43 pm
Hey Ranjit,
Well it\’s nice set as a whole, with descent features. But the few problem I met was,
Battery : I think 1:30 Hr of battery life is pretty low . To shoot the entire 1 hour cassette we have to switch of the camera when we not recoring, otherwise the battery won\’t last to complete the cassette. But I guess this is the case in most the cams.
Bit Bulky : Well first time I saw it , I liked it and it weighed light enough. But it sure is heavy if you are shooting continously for an hour or so.
Snap : there is a \”photo\” button, what it actually does is, Record the image for 5 secs. Basically same as pausing a movie in between.
Few great things :
Compatibility : Now unlike my other devices , my PC did not take much time to recognise it. Though I don\’t use their crappy software, Windows movie maker does a great job.
Cassette : The best thing is the cassette is available everywhere. I bought one from a damn rural place in kerala, works great. The showroom guys may say that they don\’t give cassette with it and you have to buy one, but just stress a bit and they might give out the Rs 120 /- cassette with the free Bag.
Pretty Cool Cam for this range, just dont look into higher models
. but still I wish I could have bought the DVD one, lighter, compact and looks very cool.
Hope that helps.
Best Regards,
–

I use Windows Movie Maker to get the Video’s.
Connect Cam to PC and open Windows Movie Maker
then..
File > Capture Video.
The cam name should show up in the next window. You can figure out what to do next from there
.

I have the same model, and I love it but I can’t seem to find the right driver to make it into a webcam…any help out there?
December 5th, 2006 at 1:14 pm
Dear Sreejith,
I have a Sony TRV 325E. One of the earlier models, it didnt’t come with a USB port. All it has is a DV out port, which I assume is a firewire port. I picked up a cable which goes into this DV out port, and I connect the other end to my USB port of my PC. It doesnt seem to read this, despite working on windows XP. Do i need a driver for this? Would be great if you could help me out.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
Hi Josh,
Even I’m facing the same problem.
After searching in the net, i came to one conclusion that the PC need a IEEE-1394 host adaptor.
This will be useful in connecting the cam to ur PC.
If you find any other solution, Please mail me.

January 9th, 2007 at 2:32 am
Dan … Neither could I
–
Saakthii … That is the case of any other cam. The quality can be increased via the preferences in the video extracting tool you use. But better the quality greater will be the file size.
If you want good quality with low size then consider using a DivX coverter.
–
sri prakash … Both ways are fine. If you go for professional hardwares then you will be able to get good quality video . But I believe we can get a pretty decent quality video if we can set the preferences right.
For e.g in Windows Movie Maker we have a option of setting up the video quality.

Hello,
For all those people who have the DCR TRV 285e and have lost the software CD and drivers, here is what you need to do in order to capture your videos:
1) Download the driver for your handycam here:
http://www.eartcenter.ru/download/drivers/usbdrven.exe
2) Run the setup and install the driver (dont worry…there is no virus etc!..:)) You might have to restart your computer.
3) Download Microsoft Movie Maker here:
http://www.download.com/Windows-Movie-Maker-Windows-XP-/3000-13631_4-10187903.html?tag=lst-0-1
4) Run and install microsoft movie maker!
5) Now connect your handycam (dcr-trv285e) to your computer using the USB cable provided. In case you’ve lost the cable, buy it from any computer hardware store. It is a standard cable.
6) Now switch on the handycam. Your PC should show USB Device detected, Sony Imaging Device etc etc. If the device driver window opens up then select the “Let Windows Detect the Driver Automatically” option and continue installing the drivers.
7) Change the mode of the handycam to the “Play/Edit” Mode.
9) Now run Microsoft Movie Maker and select “Capture from video device”. A window should open up showing the Sony device.
10) Select it, then select your video options. Audio from USB cable (ignore the microphone option below). In the next window, click on the play button on your handycam.
Click on Capture and stop when you want!!!
Enjoy!!!
Cheers!

Hi Shreejit,
I hv same DRC-TRV285 sony handycam model. I am able to download the recorded video into the harddisk using picture package. But it takes huge amount of disk space. when i use direct burn DVD/VCD option it says ‘not enough memory on the disk’. I have around 8 GB of free space in my temp folder of hard disk. Manual says you should have at least 6GB of free hard disk space. Also, drive should be compatible. My DVD writer is DRU 120C which does not figure in the list of compatible drives given by http://www.ppackage.com. Can it be the reason ? any solution anyone ?
